My husband and I have always bought houses off the beaten path. Sunrise from our screened porch is nothing short of breath taking. The kind that pull layers of skin off and leave a mark for days after they're removed. The kind where you close your eyes and rip it off as fast as you possibly can because it hurts to remove. That's how I feel about my trip to Costco. We're known for our southern hospitality, our southern cooking, our funny accents and yes, sadly, the fact that the majority of us are overweight. The south isn't known for its healthy eating habits or healthy lifestyle although our area is doing a great job of trying to change that. If you have to wonder why we have this reputation, visit our local Costco. At the end of each aisle is a nice lady handing out free food samples. The things they hand out are ridden with calories, fat and grease and the smells are divine and deadly. If not careful, a good WW'er can be taken down in seconds with nothing left but an I blew it blog to write. People from two counties over will put on their yoga/stretch pants, load the kids up in the van and head over for the all you can eat buffet at the Costco. It's a family affair. I don't know if it's the smell of grease or what, but people lose their basic manners when it comes free samples. They'll park their cart, or buggy as we call it in the south, right smack in the middle of the aisle and proceed to plug the rest of the aisle up with their backside and kids all trying to get a sample of whatever cheesy goodie that is being handed out. They seem completely oblivious to their surroundings and the fact others are trying to move about. My blood pressure is always elevated when I'm maneuvering up and down the aisles. I really wish Costco would have a designated area for handing out samples other then the main flow of traffic. It starts from the time we get up every morning until the time we go to bed. We are bombarded with ads and cooking shows for food and drink 24/7. When you go to a store, the healthy foods are not displayed at eye level nor are they handed out freely like the other foods. Costco will give out free fruit samples sometimes; however, for the most part it's cheese cake, burritos and cheese dips. All these foods are typically convenient and less expensive then their healthy counterparts. We're told we need to look like models but these very models are advertising the junk. Come on, do you think they eat that junk? It leaves us feeling like we have multiple personality disorder. Have you ever battled with that other personality? It's like walking around with a television in your head. Go ahead, you deserve it. If you take just a second and observe, it's the best defense against caving.
